Unit: The Cell

Title: Organelle Presentations

Lesson Overview
Groups will give 15-20min presentations will take place over 2 days. Students will be taught the various organelles, their function and importance to the cell by their peers. The students will receive a Cell structure and function chart prior to the presentations that are to be completed throughout the presentations.
Objectives: Students will be able to…
  1. Organize their research in a way that conveys the function, structure, and importance of an organelle
  2. Distinguish the important information regarding their organelle from information that is not as important.
  3. Explain their organelles function, structure, and importance, in a clear informational way that educates their peers.
  4. Identify the different organelles of a cell.
  5. Explain the functions, structure, and importance for the various organelles.
  6. Relate the organelles function to the characteristics of life.

Safety Issues
The presentations should be checked in advance to make sure that the presentations do not pose a danger to the students. (ie. an experiment, or a dangerous demonstration, etc).

Instruction
DAY 1
Opening
I will instruct each group to put whatever materials they have for their presentation, (poster, research papers, thumb drive for powerpoints, etc) to put them on the table that has their group number on it. I will take attendance and pass out the Cell function and structure worksheet and explain that they are to fill out the worksheet during the presentations. I will then have the number 1-7 on separate slips of paper and will pull one out of the hat to indicate who goes first.

Learning Activities
Each group will present information on different organelles so they will, in effect, be teaching their peers about their organelle. They will also be filling out the worksheet which will allow them to write key points regarding each organelle, so upon its competition the worksheet will portray the cell in its entirety.

Closing
Hopefully 3 groups will have been able to do their presentations today. I will recap the key information regarding the organelles that were covered. I will also go over the worksheet to make sure that everyone is filling it out.

Assessment
The assessments for this lesson are mainly the presentations. It will also be the completion of the worksheet.

Homework
No homework tonight.

Instruction
DAY 2
Opening
I will have them answer the question of the day, which will be, what organelles were covered yesterday? Give at least one function for each organelle. I will then take attendance and collect the responses. I will then draw the next number to indicate which group will be presenting first.
Learning Activities
Each group will present information on different organelles so they will, in effect, be teaching their peers about their organelle. They will also be filling out the worksheet which will allow them to write key points regarding each organelle, so upon its competition the worksheet will portray the cell in its entirety.

Closing
Hopefully 4 groups will have been able to do their presentations today. I will recap the key information regarding the organelles that were covered. I will also go over the worksheet to make sure that everyone is filling it out. I will inform them that they will have a quiz tomorrow on the organelles of the cell and to use the cell worksheet to study.

Assessment
The assessments for this lesson are mainly the presentations. It will also be the completion of the worksheet.

Homework
Study for the quiz.
